Open Burning

Outdoor burning is permitted in South Strabane Township under certain conditions.

The days and hours for burning in a screened burn barrel are Wednesday 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Materials which may be burned in a burn barrel include paper and paper products; no garbage, leaves or other trash which may create offensive odors are permitted to be burned. Newspapers which are collected as part of the Township's curbside program are not permitted to be burned.

Outdoor burning of brush, wood or similar materials (not in a burn barrel) is only allowed by requesting permission from the Fire Chief.

A burning permit must be obtained prior to the burning of trees incidental to the development of land or the construction of buildings. Information on such burning permit can be obtained from the Township office by calling 724-225-9055. The Township's full Burning Ordinance may be found here.

Guidelines for Conducting an Open Burn

  • It is important to ration what you plan on burning during a given time frame. Begin your burn early to ensure it concludes by then end of permissible burn hours (see above). If planned correctly, the fire should extinguish on its own.
  • Attendance by the property owner is mandatory while conducting an open burn. If the fire is left unobserved it must be extinguished.
  • While South Strabane Township strictly enforces permissible burn hours, if your burn pile cannot safely be extinguished within the stated time frame, please contact Fire Chief Cramer at 724-225-9055 for further instruction.
