Recycling Program

Recycling Collection

Per the mandated requirements of Act 101, South Strabane Township began its state-mandated resident recycling program in 1992. All households within the Township are required to participate in the curbside recycling program. Currently the program consists of once-per-month curbside collection of the following items: aluminum & bi-metal cans, plastic containers (#1 & #2 only), and paper products, including cardboard. All permitted materials must be placed within designated 20-gallon blue recycling containers provided by the Township. Loose items placed outside of the designated recycling bins will not be collected by Waste Management. Please note that glass is no longer an acceptable material in the curbside collection program.

Annually, the Township solicits bids for curbside recycling collection. Currently, the Township is entered into an agreement with Waste Management. Per the current recycling schedule, materials are collected on the 1st Monday of each month, unless impacted by a recognized holiday, in which case collection will occur the next day. The 2023 schedule can be found on the Township’s website. All residences are entitled to one Township provided recycling bin free of charge. Additional bins and lids may be purchased at the Township Municipal Building for $9 & $4, respectively. Residents are also encouraged to use various recycling collection sites for materials such as yard waste, glass, and excess cardboard. Please visit the associated tabs on this page for further information concerning the Townships recycling collection sites.

As discussed earlier, Act 101 is a state-wide program which distributes funding to municipalities based on the overall tonnage of recyclables collected during the previous year. The Township would like to highlight that participation in the Township’s recycling program is a state requirement, and not voluntary. This mandate applies to residential dwellings as well as commercial businesses and institutions. Programs such as the curbside leaf, limb, and brush collections in the spring/fall, the glass recycling program, and the distribution of recycling containers for new residences are all funded through the Act 101 program. By actively participating in the Township’s Recycling Program, you are ensuring that South Strabane Township continues to receive the financial resources to enhance and build upon its recycling programs and efforts.

Should you have any questions concerning the Township’s recycling program, please contact us via phone at 724-225-9055 or by email to info@southstrabane.com. We thank you for your participation.

Businesses, commercial, and industrial locations in the Township must recycle aluminum cans, corrugated cardboard and office paper. Annual reports are to be submitted to the Township on the quantity of materials recycled. The FM-11 Act 101 Reporting form may be found here.
